Key points

  • Simple finishing jobs (painting, resealing silicone, hanging things, changing the AC filter) suit a homeowner.
  • The consumer unit, new wiring, gas, structural elements and termite treatment are jobs for a licensed professional.
  • Any structural change (removing a wall, opening a slab or column) needs a structural engineer and a permit.
  • The test: if a mistake could cause a shock, fire, collapse or a hidden leak, it is not an amateur job.

Doing it yourself saves money and brings the satisfaction of a finished job, but some mistakes only show up months later, or have serious consequences. Use this table before you start.

2) The golden rule

If a mistake could cause an electric shock, fire, collapse or hidden leak, the job is not for amateurs, however simple it looks in a video.

3) When you call a professional

  1. Ask for a written quote with materials, quantities and specifications. See the renovation checklist.
  2. Check the licence or commercial registration and experience with the same type of work.
  3. Agree the warranty and its duration in writing.
  4. Photograph services before walls and ceilings are closed so you know their routes later.
