Key points

  • A good quote is itemised with quantities, specifications and duration, not just a lump sum.
  • Tie payments to completed and accepted stages, not dates.
  • Inspect hidden work before it's covered, and document it.
  • Collect warranties, data sheets and as-built drawings.

This checklist distils the detailed Binaaline guides, organised by project stage. Print or save it and use it with your contractor.

1) Before contracting

  1. Define the scope of work in writing (what will be removed, installed, and kept).
  2. Get at least 3 quotes for the same scope so the comparison is fair.
  3. The quote must state: quantities, material specifications (e.g. BIa porcelain, C2TE S1 adhesive, CG2WA grout, pipes with application class), duration, warranty, and who supplies materials.
  4. Check the contractor's commercial registration, classification and previous work, and ask for references from past clients.
  5. Tie payments to completed, accepted stages.
  6. Agree in writing how extra work and material changes will be handled.
  7. Check whether municipal permits are needed for the type of work.

2) When materials are delivered

  1. Match materials against the contract (type, classification, shade and calibre codes for tiles).
  2. Ask for technical data sheets and certificates of conformity.
  3. Check expiry dates of adhesive, grout and membranes (cementitious products have a shelf life).
  4. Store materials away from sun and moisture, especially insulation. See thermal insulation.

3) During the work — hold points and inspections

4) At handover

  1. A handover walk-through with a written snag list and a date for fixing it.
  2. Operate every point: water, drainage, electrics, air conditioning.
  3. Test the RCDs.
  4. Check tiles by light tapping, joint alignment and grout cleanliness.
  5. Collect: warranties, material data sheets, photos of hidden work, the electrical circuit schedule, and spare tiles with the same codes.
  6. Make the final payment after the snags are fixed.
