BinaalineThe construction encyclopedia

Key points

  • Electrical Installation Guide: a dedicated circuit for each large appliance such as the washer, dishwasher and cooker, and fixed heaters connect to fixed terminals, not a plug.
  • Appliances near water (kitchen, laundry) need RCD protection per the code.
  • Water appliances need their own valve and a trapped drain; dryers and hoods need venting outside depending on type.
  • Compare the energy label of the specific model if the product is on the regulation's list, and keep the invoice and warranty card (at least two years for electrical appliances).

Large appliances are usually bought after construction, but whether they install well is decided before that: is there a suitable socket and circuit? Water and drainage? A vent outlet? Room for maintenance? This guide is organised by appliance and location.

1) Electricity

  • A dedicated circuit for each large appliance such as the washer, dishwasher and cooker, and fixed heaters connect to fixed terminals, not a plug1. See wires and sizes.
  • Kitchen and laundry appliances are near water; protecting sockets with an RCD of no more than 30 mA is required by the international standard2, and the binding reference is SBC 4013. See breakers and RCDs.
  • Do not run a large appliance from an extension lead or multi-plug (practical advice). See electrical problems.

2) By appliance

ApplianceNeedsWatch out (practical advice)
Washing machineDedicated circuit1, water valve, trapped drainA level floor that takes vibration, and a nearby floor drain if possible
DishwasherDedicated circuit1, water and drain under the sinkLeave access to the valve without removing the unit
Cooker and ovenDedicated circuit1 or gas depending on typeGas piping is specialist work; do not put the hob under a window with nearby curtains
DryerPower per its rating, and an outside vent if it is a vented typeClean the lint filter after each use per the maker's instructions
FridgeA nearby dedicated socket and ventilation around itLeave the clearance the maker specifies behind and above
Kitchen hoodAn outside vent (for ducted types)Clean grease filters regularly

3) Water and humidity

  • A dedicated valve for each water appliance lets it be repaired without shutting off the house. See basins and toilets.
  • Draining through a trap prevents odours4.
  • Waterproofing the laundry floor and a floor drain limit damage from any leak. See waterproofing under tiles.
  • Moisture from cooking and drying is removed by extract fans; suitable indoor humidity is below 60%5. See indoor air.

4) Before buying

  1. Energy label: if the product is on the list in the General Technical Regulation for Energy Efficiency, it must carry the label; compare it for the specific model6.
  2. Dimensions with ventilation clearances, and the route to bring the unit in (doors and stairs).
  3. Connection type: plug or fixed, and the appliance power in watts. Estimate use with the electricity calculator.
  4. Warranty: at least two years for electrical appliances, extended by any delay in spare parts or repairs7. See warranties.
  5. After-sales service and spare parts availability in your city.

We do not favour one brand over another; the decision rests on the model's efficiency label, the warranty and the service available to you.
